Apollo 8: The Earth From Here

2022-07-10T22:54:47+00:00Categories: Apollo, Apollo 8, Apollospace Presents, Films|Tags: , , |0 Comments

In anticipation of the 50th Anniversary of the historic Apollo 8 mission, the first to leave the close confines of planet Earth and venture to the Moon, Apollospace produced this short film, “Apollo 8: The Earth From Here.”

In December 1968, a year marred by division and pain, human beings ventured farther out than ever before.  The crew of Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders became the first human beings to see the entire Earth, the lunar farside, and the first Earthrise. This short film uses the highest resolution, fully restored Apollo 8 photographs accompanied by contemporaneous radio transmission descriptions from the Apollo 8 crew.

October 11, 1968: Liftoff of Apollo 7.  The Apollo era begins, and within nine short months and four additional missions, America landed men on the Moon and a human being set foot there.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo era, beginning with the launch of Apollo 7 in October, 1968, Apollospace presents, “Reflections: Apollo 7 in Pictures and Words,” featuring our best Apollo 7 photography described by the sole remaining crewman from that mission: Apollo 7 astronaut Walt Cunningham.  In this 23 minute film, Walt reflects on his NASA career, some of his favorite Apollo images, and the future of spaceflight.  The interview with Walt was shot in 4K on August 30, 2018, and the dozens of Apollo era images featured in the film are higher resolution than that – select the 4K option in the settings.  Please enjoy Walt’s reflections on Apollo 7 and the many wonderful photographs he took.  The beginning, fifty years ago today.

Apollo 7 astronaut Walt Cunningham graciously allowed us to interview him on August 30th, 2018 for a documentary featuring the photography of Apollo 7.  The completed documentary, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Apollo 7 and Apollo 7 photography, will be released on the Apollo 7 50th anniversary in October.  We shot in 4K and the finished product will prominently feature Apollo 7 photography in 4K.  In the meantime, below is a raw clip of a pre-interview conversation with Walt while equipment was still getting set up.

Remembering Alan Bean

I am devastated at news of the loss of Apollo 12 & Skylab II Astronaut, Alan Bean (March 15, 1932 – May 26, 2018).  Alan Bean was a hero in so many respects, as a Navy test pilot, an astronaut, 4th man on the moon during Apollo 12, commander of Skylab II living in space for 59 days, an amazing artist and an incredible wit, but most importantly he was a dear sweet human being. Someone with a childlike sparkle in his eyes who genuinely enjoyed life and the people he met. He was touched by the beauty of our planet, humanity, and all life and that awe at the wonder of creation was contagious. His joy and good humor are irreplaceable.  There simply will not be another like him.

I was incredibly fortunate to know him for about 20 years and cannot possibly recount all the wonderful conversations we had over the years. There was a sincerity and genuineness about him […]
