APOLLOSPACE is pleased to offer a collection of Apollo 16 Astronauts Charlie Duke or Ken Mattingly signed Apollo 16 event covers which have been affixed with a remnant piece of Apollo 16 Kapton foil that was originally part of the protective insulation of the Apollo 16 command module “Casper,” and was flown in space to the moon from April 16-7, 1972. The Kapton from which the attached remnant was cut was originally from the personal collection of NASA Supervisory Aerospace Technologist Dick Underwood (see accompanying certificate of authenticity from Sandy Clarkson of “The Right Stuff Space”) and subsequently purchased by APOLLOSPACE. Underwood was chief engineer on the production of the first topographic maps of the moon. He was the first person to view every photograph from the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and the first 23 space shuttle missions. He also provided technical training to every astronaut who went into space in the twentieth century.
The Kapton foil originally consisted of two (2) remnants affixed to a presentation certificate, as seen in the images below. These were cut into smaller remnants with each measuring approximately ¼- inch long which were then attached to a total of 10 Charlie Duke or Ken Mattingly signed vintage Apollo 16 event covers, marked as Nos. 1-10 A16-SE #1 (Signed Edition #1).
