Description
Apollo 15 astronaut Jim Irwin owned and fully documented flown 4×6 inch flag of the nation of South Vietnam. Outstanding provenance with Irwin’s signed and notarized letter of authenticity, a previously sealed and signed manila envelope with an image of the flag, and a letter explaining why Irwin would not sign flags (believing doing so would desecrate them). Ironically, the Apollo program, or “Space Race” began as a cold war competition against “communism”, with the proxy war in Vietnam representing the darkest and deadliest aspect of that era. By the time Apollo 15 launched in July of 1971, the US had just decided to pull all remaining troops out of South Vietnam the month prior, and within a few years the nation of South Vietnam ceased to exist. An interesting and historical item!
